Searching for Great Light

My oldest son and I went to Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano, TX this evening to take pictures.  I gave him free reign of my Nikon D60 and I used my D300.  He is an incredibly creative child and I try to encourage this gift by giving him the tools and opportunity when we have the time.  Summer is perfect for that.  We walked through the paths of the preserve this evening looking at the mid summer prairie grasses and plants, but we were really on a hunt for great evening light.  I think we found it.

Texas Snowstorm

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep

Support the Little Guy and Buy Handmade

I LOVE Etsy and so should you.  Don’t bother with PB, Crate and Barrel or Anthropologie.   The artisans and designers that display their goods on Etsy are the real deal.  Be original, support the small guy and save money in the process.

Perusing Etsy boutiques on another icy day here in north Texas, here are some of my favorites:

Adorable hair pins handmade by Nest Pretty Things.

Cute cosmetic bag by Cut Out and Collect.

DeDeetsy creates pillows with a fresh twist.

I need this sign by Nick Agin next to my coffee maker.  A necessity for anyone living with a teen or tween.

I’d love to haul my groceries in this tote by Take Flight Boutique.

Custom birthday banners by Bayou Moon.  Cuter than PB and way more affordable.

Super creative block prints by johnwgolden

Simple and lovely earrings by Nest Pretty Things.

For the little girl in your life who loves to twirl.  Adorable creations by Emmilee Designs. Who needs Oilily?

The Gift of a Snow Day

There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.
Jane Austen

The day started off with pancakes…

Then on to reading…

and Legos…

And still, she reads….

A little reading, writing and arithmetic.

The shoes in our garage say it all about winter weather in Texas.

The game of Life.  The real gift of a snow day is time.

We can thank THIS day for extra time together.

iPhone Photography

Now, I love my Nikon D300s and my baby Nikon D60, but the iPhone camera is all about fun for me and truly capturing “the moment”.

Go Play Outside

This is a look back at getting the kids outside in 2010.  When I was growing up, playing and being outside was just part of childhood.   This is not true for my children.  We live in a part of the country where there is very little nature unless you seek it out.  My husband and I have to be mindful about getting our children outside to play and experience nature.  Children love nature and want to be in it.  Give kids the opportunity and they relish it.  It suits their natural curiosity and energy perfectly.  So tell the kids, go play outside.  If you can’t, try to make it happen for them.

Watching the clouds go by and the light in the trees.

The joy of finding a ladybug.

The shore is the perfect place for kids to explore and experience nature.

Hermit crabs ARE fun and provide hours of entertainment to little ones.

To experience the cool of a stream on a hot and humid summer day….priceless.

Netting for crabs…even if unsuccessful, what a memory maker.

Walking in a field with century old stone walls and barns….let their imagination go wild.

Running through tall grass on a cool autumn day…good stuff.

The hat is a prop, but one picked by my son.    He instinctively knew this hat would be a perfect compliment to being outside. It was his idea to go sit in the grass.  Honestly, I think he was pretending to be a wild animal.

A snowy day for this city boy from Texas….a rare and welcome treat.

Snow angels…what else do I need to say?

Please get your kids to play outside.  You should play outside.  If you don’t live near nature, make plans to get to it.   Plan your family vacation around outdoor activities.  These are the memories your kids will remember.  So go play outside in 2011!

Images of Christmas Eve

A very special family creche.

One of my favorite Christmas songs…

We cherish holiday cards from our friends and family.  The cards are hung by our fireplace.  We love to look at them and be reminded of the special people in our lives.

Another favorite…

A source of joy and anticipation over the past 25 days.

Snowglobes are magical to young children (ok, me too!)

One of my favorite ornaments from childhood.  To me, Christmas tree ornaments are about memories….new and old.

The Rat King rules over the table of nutcrackers.

My daughter received this ornament as a gift for her first Christmas from a person who was and is very special to me.

The holiday table.

All is quiet, all is still…

Cookies for Santa.

Pictures of Christmas Morning

Hex Bugs!  Thanks to Uncle Corey for the very fun gift.

Cool thinga-ma-jiggy.

Dual sabers….the battle will take place later today.

Apparently, Kuchi the Gypsy Vanner is a highly coveted Breyer.  Who knew?

Big sis happy with her gift from the little guy.

Special gift from dad.

The Ham.

Happy to have a dream catcher from big sister.

To infinity and beyond…

The book lover in our family overjoyed to have a Kindle.

A brotherly hug.

Walking in Memphis – Down Beale Street

We spent a day in Memphis last June and hung out on Beale Street.  Famous for the blues and pulled pork.

Music, food and drinks to be found everywhere.  I’m sad to report there were no Elvis sightings.

Street performers getting ready to tumble on Beale Street.

Beale Street reminded me a lot of 6th Street in Austin, TX.  Beer, people and music everyone.  Smelled kind of like 6th street too.
